Indian Cities in United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO)….

In January 2022, several Indian cities were part of the UNESCO Creative Cities
Network. These cities are recognized for their contributions to various creative
fields. Here are a few mentioned;

1.) Jaipur – Crafts and Folk Art(In 2015):-

Jaipur, known for its rich cultural heritage, is designated as a UNESCO
Creative City for Crafts and Folk Art. The city has a vibrant tradition of
handicrafts, including block printing, blue pottery, and traditional art form.

2.) Varanasi – Music(In 2015):-

Varanasi, one of the oldest cities in the world, is recognized for its musical
heritage. The city is a hub for clasical music, and its designation in the
UNESCO network acknowledges its significant role in promoting and preserving musical traditionds.

3.) Chennai – Music(In 2017):-

Chennai, the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is designated as a UNESCO
Creative City for Music. It is renowned for its contribution to classical Carnatic
music and serves as a center for music education and performances.

4.)Mumbai – Film(2019):-

Mumbai, the entertainment capital of India, is recognized for its thriving
film industry. The city’s designation in the UNESCO network highlights its
global impact on the film and television industry.

5.) Hyderabad – Gastronomy(2019):-

Hyderabad, known for its rich culinary heritage, is designated as a Creative
City for Gastronomy. The city’s diverse and flavorful cuisine has contributed
to its recognition in the UNESCO network.

  • Key points:-

1.) It’s important to note that the status of cities in the UNESCO Creative Cities
Network can change, and new additions may have occurred since my last update in
January 2022. I recommend checking the latest information to ensure accuracy.

2.)United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has
included Mumbai and Hyderabad in its network of ‘Creative Cities’ among the 66
cities selected on the occasion of World Cities Day 2019.

3.)Beside of these in 2023, there are three Indian cities to join the UNESCO of
Learning Cities was Nilambur, Thrissur, and Warangal in the state of Telangana.

4.)Explore India’s first world heritage city, Ahmedabad, Gujrat. The city of
Ahmedabad is endowed with a rich architectural heritage that is vital to the local
identity and continuity of the place

5.)India’s two cities, Gwalior and Kozhikode have joined the list of UNESCO
Creative Cities Network (UCCN) in the ‘music’ and ‘literature’ categories,
respectively. Two Indian cities, Gwalior and Kozhikode, have been added to the
prestigious list of UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN).

6.)After Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Varanasi and Jaipur, Srinagar is the sixth
Indian city to achieve this distinction in 2021 for the crafts and folk art.
